Lidatek Install

This is the Lidatek Laser Echo kit. Left is the transponder, power harness is in the middle, control box is on the right. Really all the control box does is  just detect the current being drawn by the transponder and then sounds an alert.

The license plate bracket is the "no-brainer" install. Obviously it is easy for an angry law enforcement official to see it, so I don't recommend it.

This is the transponder with the end brackets installed.

To remove the MY2002 (MY01 everywhere but USA) grille, there are 4 clips at the top (shown on left) and 2  clips at the outer bottom (shown on right). Clips can be opened by pushing down with a flat blade screwdriver. A flashlight helps too.

I bought some universal bracket kit from Radio Shack for $3.99 as I knew I needed more brackets to play with. I wound up with this configuration. (Bracket on Lidatek itself is one that came with it -- the one attached to the grille is from the Rat Shack kit).

Here's a close up from the front, showing how the nut fits in.

Here is the right hand bracket which easily fitted to the grille (drilled one small hole and bought a nice Allen head cap screw).

I routed the rather stiff cable through a spare grommet. Very hard to get to. I drilled a hole in the grommet (off car), fed the wire through it. Then I installed the whole shebang, and used some Silicone RTV where the wire passes through.

On the inside of the car, it came out near the pedals and I passed it behind the center console and to where I mounted the control box and got power (pictures later).

Here is the front view of it mounted. I used black marking pen to obliterate the "Laser Aperture" text. DO NOT PUT YOUR HEAD  IN FRONT OF THE APERTURE!

Obviously, this is a close up and with flash. Outside in sunlight or at night it is almost impossible to see unless you get down there with a flashlight.

IMPORTANT STEP: level the unit on car with the supplied bubble level as per instructions.

To test the unit, wait 60 seconds from power up (powers up in the "off cycle" mode).

Place the supplied sheet of LCD material in front of the unit and then trigger it with a camera flash off from a bit of an angle (you'll hear the alert) . You only have 5 seconds of output to capture. Pull it away and you should see a discolored splotch. If so, it is working.
